Seasonal Planning: What to Plant Each Month

If you’ve ever thrown seeds in the ground and hoped for the best—same. But planting with the seasons actually makes a huge difference in how well your garden grows. Spring is prime time for leafy greens, carrots, radishes, and peas. As soon as the frost dips, get those cool-weather crops in the ground. Come late spring and summer, it’s tomato, pepper, cucumber, and zucchini season—stuff that loves heat and sun.

Don’t try starting them to early or they’ll just sit there sulking. Fall’s perfect for round two of greens and root veggies, and if you live somewhere warm, you can squeeze in a late harvest. Winter? Not a total loss. In many zones, you can grow herbs and lettuce indoors, or even garlic and onions outside if you plan ahead. Keep a planting calendar or app to help remember what’s up next—it ain’t cheating, it’s smart gardening. Also, pay attention to your growing zone; what works in Cali might flop in Michigan. Knowing what to plant and when takes the guesswork out and makes your garden way less stressful—and way more successful.
